Hi, July!
Fireworks, Fresh Finds & Midsummer Magic in Fernandina Beach & Amelia Island
July has arrived in full bloom—and with it comes the height of summer! From the sparkle of Independence Day celebrations to the simple joys of beach days and backyard cookouts, this month is all about slowing down and appreciating all that makes this country wonderful. Whether you're hosting guests, exploring hidden island gems, or just enjoying a quiet moment on your porch, July is bursting with magic. Let’s dive into what makes this month so special.
Summer Glow-Up: Home Edition
- Light & Airy Living: Brighten up your home with fresh flowers, breezy fabrics, and little pops of color—think lemon yellow, coral pink, and sea glass green. These small touches go a long way in creating that laid-back coastal feel.
- Backyard Bliss: With July comes the heat, so investing in misting fans, citronella, and sun shades will help keep everyone festive. Bonus points if the shades are retractable and mechanical!
- Yard Rescue: It's no secret the summer can do a number on the lawn. For hard to grow areas, consider changing to rocks or artificial turf, ground cover (mondo grass, creeping thyme) or native plants (muhly grass, palmetto) that are typically drought and heat tolerant. A bonus of these are the beautiful butterflies that come to see them (and the lower water bill that comes to see you)
- Summer Scents: Swap out heavy candles and diffusers for something light and uplifting—citrus, coconut, or ocean mist. It’s a small switch that brings major vacation vibes into your everyday routine.
Celebrate the Fourth – Island Style!
- Fireworks: Plan to head downtown early, as the premier parking feels up fast. Festivities start at 6 pm downtown at the marina, but there are several other spots around that offer a specular display.
- Local Eats: Opt for the farmer's markets this time of year, for there is an abundance of fruits and vegetables in bloom! Other options are to at least make friends with those scalloping (season runs June 15th - Labor Day) for a delish treat. I really recommend trying them in a ceviche.
- Red, White & You: Dress in your festive best and snap some photos around the island—whether it's in front of the lighthouse, along Centre Street, or at your favorite beach spot, there’s no shortage of scenic backdrops for your July memories.
Island Living: Midsummer Must-Dos
- Shell Hunting at Sunrise: Wake up early and stroll the beach with a cup of coffee in hand. The sunrise views are worth the early alarm—and you might find some beautiful shells before the tide rolls in.
- Scavenger Hunt Downtown: Scavengar Hunt Amelia is a great way to get to know your friends/family and historic downtown. You are even able to choose the themes to fit the occasion.
- Paddleboarding Perfection: Truly experience the beauty and serenity of northeast Florida. You can choose self or tour guided options, but be sure to check the tides (trust me -- I learned the hard way). Some recommended vendors include Amelia Island Paddle Surf Company, Amelia Surf Company and RipTide Watersports.
Cool, Comfy & Coastal
- Icy Delights: You have to try Island Time downtown if looking for a frozen afternoon treat. We especially love the Dole Whips, but their frozen drinks are amazing too (adult and kid versions).
- Nothing Says Summer Like Ice Cream: And if this is true you must stroll over to DeNucci's. Whether is it soft-serve, hand dipped cones or old faithful's like a banana split, this is the best place to go after a round of mini golf. Portions are large - in case you feel like sharing.
- Stay Chill: Keep your fans spinning, drink plenty of water (infused with mint or berries for a twist!), and take a cue from the sea turtles—slow down and soak in the good stuff.
Home Sweet Home: July Prep Tips
- Tidy & Trim: Staying in doors in the heat of the day is a great way to stay safe from the heat. It's also a great time to tackle some inside projects like decluttering closets and sorting through clothes that are no longer needed. There are a number of consignment shops and donation centers always looking for gently used clothing for those less fortunate.
- Plan Ahead: While you're in summer mode, start thinking ahead to fall projects or back-to-school prep. The annual "Stuff the Bus" is this month and there are a number of other donation sites for those wanting to help teachers and students. Meet and greets will also be starting in early August, so start looking at the Facebook groups and school websites.
- Show Off Your Space: If you're thinking about listing your home, summer is a great time to show off your bright, inviting space. Natural light, fresh flowers, and a tidy patio can make a lasting impression on potential buyers.
Pro Tip if You're Selling:
Before putting your home on the market, snap a few test photos on a bright, sunny day—natural light makes every room feel more open and inviting. Add a vase of fresh flowers to your entryway, tuck away any cords or countertop clutter, and use a subtle citrus diffuser to create a clean, breezy vibe. Bonus touch? Set out a chilled pitcher of lemon water with a few glasses for open houses. It’s simple, refreshing, and perfectly captures that relaxed island lifestyle buyers will fall in love with.
Closing Message
July truly is the best part of the summer - vacations, lazy schedules, late nights with friends, and time on the water. It is also important to remember all that makes our country so amazing and unique. I hope everyone has an amazing summer and cheers to great memories! See you around town!
